Indiana University South Bend Civil Rights Heritage Center Oral History Project [John Charles Bryant]: There was a Black business district on Washington Street down there, which was between the Natatorium and Walnut. There were drug stores in the area, but they catered to the neighborhood people. People more in that time went to neighborhood stores. All areas in South Bend had little neighborhood stores where they would go to a lot of the time. People ran credit at neighborhood stores and would pay once a week at the end of the week when they got their check, or what have you. Things like that.
