See local African American history by visiting some of the sites where that history was made—from schools to churches to neighborhoods and sites of political and social gathering. Developed by the Indiana University South Bend Civil Rights Heritage Center, this self-guided tour honors some of the many incredible people, places, and stories told throughout our past.

Placing History print and e-book. 

The strength of South Bend, Indiana's African American community comes to life through stories of the places where history was made. Includes deep histories of ten sites that made local history including Linden School, Olivet A.M.E. Church, 'The Lake,' and the Engman Public Natatorium.

Physical books are available without financial cost upon request at the Civil Rights Heritage Center (while supplies last), or for check-out at the Civil Rights Heritage Center's lending library, the St. Joseph County Public Library, Mishawaka Penn-Harris Public Library, and the Franklin D. Schurz Library at IU South Bend (a library account is required for borrowing at each institution).
